The countryside is dotted with cottages, among which Muong houses can be recognized by their sloping roofs and stilts. Arrive in the serene Mai Chau valley around noon.  It is a beautiful jigsaw of rice fields cultivated by the White Thai, including hamlets scattered around the village. Visit two villages Lac and Van, where the expert fingers of White Thai women make all kinds of tapestries. They are based on a variety of wild silks. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the inhabitants’ houses. Evening dance show with Khène and abundance of rice wine.

Jour 5 : DIEN BIEN – LAI CHAU (B, L, D)
The name Dien Bien Phu will always be linked with a historical battle, for it was here that Viet Minh soldiers overran a French garrison on May 7, 1954 and ended French colonialism in Indochina. To achieve this legendary victory, Vietnamese forces under the command of General Vo Nguyen Giap dismantled heavy anti-aircraft guns, lugged them up the sleep slopes overlooking the town of Dien Bien Phu and reassembled them. Encircled by artillery, the French could not receive supplies or reinforcements. Today, most visitors who reach this outpost come for the history. But along with the old army headquarters, a museum and monuments, Dien Bien Phu offers pristine mountain scenery and fascinating minority cultures. Those who go overland will travel through some of Vietnam's most rugged and spectacular mountains.Drive to Lai Chau. Have lunch & dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Lai Chau.

OPTION 2: For people less interested in Dien Bien Phu, it is possible to go directly to Lai Chau from Tuan Giao.

Day 4 : MAI CHAU - SON LA (B, L, D)
Drive to Son La. En route, visit superb landscapes of mountains, green valleys of rice paddies and villages of the Black Thai minority group.  Lunch and dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Son La.

Jour 5 : SON LA - TUAN GIAO – LAI CHAU (B, L, D)
Tuan Giao is a small town at the foot of a pass, at a junction to Dien Bien Phu and Lai Chau. Leaving Tuan Giao, the pass crosses a small track through pleasant valleys and gorges alternating with rice, banana and vegetable crops. This trip permits you to visit many Red Hmong villages and also a few Kho Mu villages (a rare group of minorities) on the Sin Chai plateau. From a strictly aesthetic and ethnological point of view, this trip to Lai Chau is shorter and more interesting than the one to Dien Bien. Lunch and dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Lai Chau

Jour 6 : LAI CHAU – SIN HO – TAM DUONG (B, L, D)
Head toward Ta Phinh plateau whose town is Sin Ho, thirty kilometers to the north of Lai Chau just in behind Chieng Chan village.  A track winds on the right into a narrow gorge.  The ascent is rapid, but the road is not always in good condition. Follow a long ridge, where views from the north-east of this province to China are superb. The final part of the climb, before reaching the plateau, is a steep ridge over 1500m in altitude, while the majority of the surrounding hills do not exceed 1000m or 1200m. Arrive in Sin Ho, a delight to the eye. In the middle of a circle of limestone hills reaching toward the sky like its supporting pillars, rice fields are tiered like a Greek theater. Continue to Tam Duong. Lunch and dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Tam Duong.

Day 7 : TAM DUONG- SA PA (B, L, D)
The great interest of this area is the district market (on Thursday and Sunday), 6 km from Tam Duong. This market is one of the best markets in northern Viet Nam. Sellers and buyers come from surrounding villages. Some people walk a day from home to arrive to the market. If you have more time, you can enjoy the beauty of the landscapes while visiting Tam Duong’s surroundings.  The trail leads you to the Hmong and Dao villages. It takes an hour to walk to the closest villages and a day or more to walk to the furthest ones. With our short walk, we will take you to meet these people. The route Tam Duong- Sa Pa follows the gorge of Nam Na River after crossing the Black River. It is a journey into the wilderness.  You rarely see any villages. The road is sometimes good and sometimes jolting in certain segments. We can meet Dao women along the way. They wear black or blue pants, embroidered tunics and big black turbans. With heavy bundles of wood, they descend from the mountains by narrow paths to reach market outlets on the road. Around new houses, some terraces have been arranged for growing rice, maize and vegetables. Arrive in Sapa in late afternoon. Check in at hotel. Lunch and dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Sa Pa.

Day 8 : SA PA- LAO CHAI- TA VAN (B, L, D)
Being attracted by the climate and the beauty of the landscapes, the French colonists had made Sapa an ideal place for relaxation and holiday. The city is located at 1650m, at roof of Fanxipan, the highest mount of Viet Nam. About 08:30 am, we start trekking, the first part is on the road , and turn to the right and walk on a small path down the valley to Muong Hoa and from there to the Lao Chai village of Black Hmong. Black Hmong is one of the biggest minority groups in the Sapa area. They are proud of their culture and keep their traditions and way of living. We have lunch at Lao Chai village, after lunch we continue to Ta Van village to visit Day people. Day is a fairly small minority group in Sapa. Nowadays many women still wear traditional shirts with a purple, blue or green colour. The Day houses are build of wood and bamboo with a clay floor. From here you will be picked up and transferred back to Sapa.
The rest of the day is dedicated to leisure or shopping for delicate embroideries and batik at Sapa Fair. Climb to Ham Rong Mount for a panoramic view of Sapa. Lunch & dinner at local restaurant and overnight in Sapa.

Here others are more prudent who prefer to transport the small pigs on the levers in order to prevent them from losing weight on the path to the fair. Some go by couple, the woman carrying on back the hoods that she plaited, the men take the corn alcohol that he distilled. The girls are in their most beautiful short skirts that oscillate right and left following every their step. The sellers present some essential products such as grocery store, books and school supplies. Some peasants come to selltheir production (vegetables, raising and handicraft). Finally the women calculate the profit of the day or compare the goods, the girls make up to be more beautiful, the men enjoy the rice alcohol while discussing about horses and land… After spending the whole morning exploring the market, we can enjoy a walk to visit the Hmong King’s former residence and Ban Pho where villagers make the potent local maize alcohol.
