Description Vietnam

Gem of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam is a diamond whose every facet shows us unique landscapes, unexpected encounters, and many other surprises that reflect a page of its history and culture with diverse influences.

These are all reasons to discover this country that has opened up to tourism for twenty years, and whose history was mixed with France for almost a century.

Today, Vietnam is a destination more and more popular because it remained a country with "hidden charms", between tradition and modernity.

Located east of the Indochinese Peninsula, Vietnam stretches 1,600 kilometers from north to south. The 3,250-kilometer stretch of coastline is washed by the Gulf of Thailand, the Gulf of Tonkin, and the South China Sea, while the land borders mark the boundary between Vietnam and neighboring China, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Vietnam has 2 large river plains: the Mekong in the south and the Red River in the north. To the west, along the borders, are the areas of mountains and plateaus. The highest point is Mount Fansipan (3 143 m), located in the north of Lao Cai (ex Tonkin), a mountainous area that surrounds the vast plain of the Red River. It is this same river that bathes Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
The country is one of the planet's biodiversity hotspots: lush forests are home to amazing wildlife, while fish, crustaceans and birds abound in the Mekong Delta.

The national language of the country is Vietnamese; it is one of the rare languages of South-East Asia, with Malay and Indonesian, to be written in Latin characters. The 53 ethnic minorities each have their own dialect.

English is commonly used in hotels and the tourism sector in general. It is spoken more easily in the South than in the North, because of the American presence during the Vietnam War. It is by far the most common foreign language today.

Have a nice trip to Vietnam!

Culture

  • Vietnam is made up of a mosaic of peoples. There are no fewer than 54 different ethnic groups from China, Cambodia, and Thailand. This contributes to make Vietnam an exceptionally rich country culturally.
  • Many ethnic groups live in the mountainous regions of the North, such as the Hmong, the Tay, the Dao ... In the center and in a part of the Mekong Delta are the Chams, survivors of the Hindu kingdom of Champa. In the highlands, we find the Rhade, the Giarai (or Jorai) and the Raglai.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

The history of Vietnam is complex. Vietnam was first occupied until the 10th century by China.

Once liberated from Chinese rule, the Vietnamese spread along the coast from the Red River Delta to the Mekong Delta. Over the centuries, the dynasties will succeed and draw the borders of Vietnam as we know it today.
  • In the middle of the 19th century, the French arrive in Vietnam and integrate it into their colonial empire.
  • The 20th century marks the rise of anti-colonialist movements.
  • The independence of Vietnam is proclaimed on September 2, 1945, by Ho Chi Minh. After the failure of the negotiations, the Viet Minh launched a new insurrection in December 1946, which will end with the peace accords of Geneva in 1954, and by the recognition by France of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam north of the 17th parallel.
The two sides of Vietnam know then the setting up of ideologically opposed governments: in the north, a communist regime founded and directed by Ho Chi Minh, and in the south, a nationalist regime proclaimed by Ngô Dinh Diêm and supported by the Americans.

The first battles between communist partisans and southern troops began in 1957 and experienced a rapid escalation following the American intervention. After fifteen years of bitter fighting and a heavy human toll, the war ends with the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement in 1973.
  • Vietnam is officially reunited on September 2, 1976, and Hanoi becomes the capital.
Today Vietnam is officially called the "Socialist Republic of Vietnam", and the Communist Party is the only party. It is a young and proud country, which has been opening to the world for 15 years.

SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CELEBRATIONS IN VIETNAM

  • Tet Nguyen Dan - Lunar New Year : this is the most important Vietnamese holiday. It marks the beginning of a new year and the sign of the arrival of spring. According to the belief of the Asians, each lunar year is placed under an astrological sign.
  • Tet Nguyen Tieu : is the first full moon day of the lunar year. During the festivities, the pagodas and streets are decorated with lanterns. After the ceremony, Vietnamese people participate in the festival of lanterns of flowers, which they put and let flow in the river.
  • The second-largest traditional festival in Vietnam, the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu) : is an opportunity to reunite with its family. As you look at the moon, you can enjoy the "banh deo" (glutinous rice cake) and the "banh nuong" (grilled cakes) together and enjoy chrysanthemum green tea. It is also the most anticipated holiday season for children, who are offered new toys, including lanterns, masks, and small drums and rattles, to animate the mid-autumn parade.
SOME RULES OF BEHAVIOR

  • In Vietnam, it is better to remain calm, not be aggressive or angry.
  • Regarding a rule of manners, remember to take off your shoes when you enter a temple or a house.
  • In sacred places (pagodas, churches temples ...), speak in a low voice and avoid touching objects of worship (statuettes of genies and Buddhas). Wear clothes covering the shoulders and legs.
  • It is strongly discouraged to touch the head of a Vietnamese; in Europe, touching someone's head can be perceived as a friendly gesture, but it is not at all the case in Vietnam, it is for them a gesture that is very badly perceived. Indeed, the Vietnamese believe that the head is sacred since it is the home of the soul.
  • When eating, do not plant the chopsticks in a bowl filled with rice. It is indeed a ritual that we do for the dead.
USEFUL TIPS
  • Avoid swimming in stagnant water (risk of parasitic infection).
  • Avoid walking barefoot on sand and wet soil.

  • Stay away from dead animals, animals and their droppings.

  • Do not approach stray animals and dogs (risk of biting and rabies); do not pet the animals you meet.

  • Shake clothes, sheets and sleeping bag to avoid scorpion stings or snakes.

  • Ensure your road safety (wearing the seat belt, wearing the helmet in two wheels).

  • Never consume drugs purchased on the street.

  • Wash your hands regularly with hydro-alcoholic washing solutions
THE FOOD

Vietnamese cuisine is one of the most subtle and varied in Southeast Asia. Unlike its close neighbors, the Vietnamese cook without spice, but it is present fresh, sliced on the table for fans who would spice up their dishes.

Rice is the essential component of any Vietnamese meal, and the main condiment of Vietnamese cuisine is nuoc mam. It is a fish sauce fermented in salt. In addition, the use of aromatic herbs is ubiquitous; they are served separately so that you can add them according to your taste.
  • IN THE NORTH : the cuisine of the North is largely based on noodle soups, simmered dishes, grilled meats. It allows palates to find the tastes of the products used.
  • IN THE CENTER : in the cooking style of the Center, there are many Cham elements and the imperial court of Hue. It is the most contrasting cuisine in the country. It is very refined and largely uses steam cooking. Beware however, it is the exception that confirms the rule, many dishes (those inspired by Cham) are cooked with hot peppers.
  • IN THE SOUTH : southern cuisine is inspired by the North, but with local ingredients. It is characterized by many sweet and savory.
SOME VIETNAMESE SPECIALTIES :

  • The phở: native of Hanoi, it is the national dish par excellence. Made with broth, beef slices and rice noodles. It is topped with more or less fresh soy, Chinese basil, mint, lime and peppers.
  • Another typical dish and very appreciated is the banh khoai or bánh xèo. It is a crepe or omelette, made from rice flour flavored with cumin, stuffed with soya beans, thin slices of pork and shrimp. It is served hot and crisp, seasoned with nuoc-mâm.
  • The famous bun bo is a Vietnamese soup composed of rice vermicelli, beef, soy sprouts, herbs to add to the taste of everyone and the broth is especially delicious !
  • In Europe, we know Bún bò Nam Bộ (we call it the Bo Bun); it is a salad of rice vermicelli, beef, salads, nem sauce and peanuts and legumes according to each recipe.
Conviviality is often the keyword during a Vietnamese meal, because all the dishes are arranged at the center of the table and accompanied by the necessary condiments such as: spicy sauce, soy sauce, possibly a small bowl of fresh chilli and the famous nuoc -mâm. Each uses according to his desires using bowl and chopsticks.

PASSPORT & VISA

Your passport must be in good condition, valid at least 6 months after the planned exit from Vietnamese territory, and have at least 2 free pages face to face.

For a stay of less than 15 days / 14 nights, the Vietnamese visa is not mandatory for French nationals (Canadian and Swiss citizens are not exempt from Vietnamese visa). This exemption is valid until June 30, 2021. It is normally renewed by the Vietnamese Government on that date. This visa waiver is only valid for a single entry visa.

For visa-exempt travelers, a second visa-free entry can only be made after 30 days after the last Vietnamese exit.
In case of double entry on Vietnamese territory (for example if you make the round trip to Siem Reap in Cambodia before returning to Vietnam), travelers have only one exemption (not two). It is advisable to use this exemption for the first entry and then to use a single entry visa for the second entry. In case of multiple entries, a multiple entry visa is required.

For stays of more than 15 days in Vietnam, you have the choice between several options to obtain the Vietnamese visa:
An e-visa or Vietnam visa online, which costs 25 USD for a stay of up to one month. The number of border crossings that accept this type of visa is limited and can be found here, however there is no problem if arriving by an international airport.
A visa on arrival for stays between one month and three months, single or multiple entry, with letter of invitation. The price varies according to the number of entries (25 USD for single entry, 50 USD for multiple entries).

A Vietnam visa obtained at the Vietnamese Embassy in France, which costs 70 euros.

Before leaving, we advise you to photocopy all important documents (passport, electronic equipment invoices, insurance policy, plane tickets, driving license ...). A handy tip if you lose your papers or valuables.

HEALTH and VACCINES

No vaccination is required but some vaccinations are recommended: make sure you are up-to-date with your usual vaccinations (especially diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis (DTP), and rubella, mumps and measles in children). We strongly advise you to make an appointment with your doctor, or with a vaccination center.

Depending on local travel conditions, vaccinations against typhoid fever and viral hepatitis A and B are recommended.
Rabies vaccination is very often recommended in Vietnam, especially for planned trips to remote rural areas. Ask your doctor or an international vaccination center for advice.

Finally, for stays in rural areas in Vietnam, vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is also desirable. In addition to vaccination, this viral disease being transmitted by mosquito bites, it is necessary to resort to protective measures against mosquitoes.

Do not hesitate to provide a small kit of pharmacies with some basic products, it will be very useful in case of first aid.

CLIMATE

Vietnam is located in subtropical and tropical climate zones, with an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The climate system of Vietnam is very complex because of its position, its topography and its extent (7 ° of latitude from north to south). Many areas, whether on the plateaux or on the coast, benefit from microclimates that can be very different from the general climate.

The north has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and accompanied by heavy monsoon rains. In autumn, the temperatures become more pleasant and the precipitations become rare. During the winter, temperatures can drop from 10 to 15 degrees with a slight drizzle. The mornings are cool. If you choose to travel to northern Vietnam in winter, it is better to have a little wool and a rain suit. Spring is the perfect season to visit northern Vietnam. The temperature is mild, the rains are rare and the rice fields are adorned with a gradient of incomparable green.

The south enjoys a typical tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season from October to May and the wet season from June to October. Even during the rainy season, the sun and the heat are at the rendezvous. The heavy storm and monsoon rains come to cool the atmosphere, especially in the evening.

The center of the country knows a mix of these two main climates, with a constant wet and hot. Beware however in autumn, the center is likely to receive the passage of typhoons born in the Pacific.

INSURANCE

All travelers have the obligation to take out an insurance policy for their trip before participating in our tours. In order to cope with hospitalization costs and sometimes very high health expenses abroad, it is highly recommended to have an assistance contract or insurance to cover all medical expenses (surgery, hospitalization ...) and medical repatriation, at the risk of not having access to care, including in the event of a vital emergency. These costs can not be supported by the embassy or consulates general of France on the spot.

ELECTRICITY

The electric current is 220 volts and the catches are identical to the French catches before European standardization (in the South, we find in the rooms both American and European catches). You do not need an adapter

THE NATIONAL CURRENCY: the Vietnamese dong (VND).

Many current transactions are made in cash. It is easy to find ATMs in the big cities (distributors in Vietnam take a charge on withdrawals, in addition to the costs of your bank). It is advisable to take precautions for stays in rural areas or smaller cities, taking enough cash on oneself.

There are banknotes of 500,000, 200,000, 100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, 1,000 and 500 VND.

INTERNET

You will find an internet connection very easily in airports, cafes, hotels and restaurants.
In contrast, in the countryside, the connection is more restricted, but almost all hotels have their own Internet connection, so it is always possible to stay connected during your trip.

Be sure to think about disabling your "Cellular Data Abroad" to avoid the bad surprise of the bill when you return to France.
If you want to stay connected, you can also buy a prepaid local sim card and buy one of the packages offered by many operators (Viettel, Mobifone, Vinafone ...), be careful anyway because you will not be able to receive your messages and calls on your usual number.

SECURITY / LAW

Vietnamese legislation is particularly severe in the face of drug trafficking offenses. Indeed, the Vietnamese Penal Code provides that anyone found in possession of more than 100 grams of heroin or cocaine, or more than 5 kg of opium, or more than 75 kg of cannabis, is liable to 'life imprisonment or the death penalty.

In order to avoid pickpocketing during your trip, we encourage you to follow a few simple rules. If you have valuable items or a lot of cash, put them in the hotel safe so they will be safe. It is also not recommended to bring valuables to the beach or, if there is no choice, to stay close to your belongings in order to monitor them.

WATER / FOOD

Be very careful about the water you drink. Never drink tap water as it is not drinkable. Always drink bottled water, and check that it is properly capped. It is also necessary to be vigilant with ice cubes: only use ice cubes with a cubic shape or with a cylindrical hole in the middle.

HUE

Hue has inherited a long history that dates back to the time when it was the center of the Chinese imperial administration under the Han dynasty, in the 2nd century BC. It became a small independent principality, then temporarily capital of the kingdom of Champa, and was not attached to the kingdom of Dai Viet until 1036. It underwent the avatars of dynastic struggles between Lê, Trinh, Nguyen and Mac before being chosen as capital by the future emperor Gia Long in 1801. On the banks of the Perfume River, Song Huong, the city is surrounded by five hills symbolizing the five elements (wood, fire, air, metal, water). The hill to the south, plays a special role of protection against the harmful magical influences attributed to this direction.

The visits :
  • The imperial city: built by the daily effort of 80,000 workers, enclose fortifications with the Vauban, perfectly oriented according to the cardinal points according to the Chinese model, and opening by ten doors, it is formed by three concentric elements: the citadel, the imperial city (Kinh Thanh) and the purple city (Tu Cam Thanh), the respective domains of the Mandarin hierarchy, the imperial family and the emperor. The imperial city, which became a museum after the war, has collected valuable documentation on the history of Vietnam and is a well-preserved monument.
  • The imperial tombs of the Nguyen: each of these imperial tombs reconstructs the layout of a palace, the home of the deceased having to be in the same image as during his lifetime. Built along the Perfume River, you can admire tombs whose style varies according to the time, from the sober and stripped Vietnamese style (tomb of Gia Long) to the free variations on the theme of the Ming Chinese tombs (tomb of Minh Mang), then towards an aesthetic full of refinement (tomb of Tu Duc), before attempting a difficult baroque synthesis between tradition and modernism (tomb of Khai Dinh).

Moreover, all the ships coming from China, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Indonesia, as well as from European countries, During their trips to the Far East for business, they all stopped at Hoi An. THE ANCIENT CHAMPA KINGDOM

The Champa is the name formerly given locally to a tree with a generally white and very fragrant flower, the Michelia Champaca. The Champa Kingdom stretched several hundred km from the center to the south of present-day Vietnam (from Da Nang- Quy Nhon- Nha Trang- to Phan Rang). It possessed mineral wealth, particularly gold. Its inhabitants practiced agriculture and shipping. They were also excellent merchants. They exploited valuable products: sandalwood, cinnamon, peppers, elephant tusks, rhino horns and precious wood they sold to Indians, Arabs, Chinese, Japanese. The sandalwood of the Cham was known in several countries of the region and sought after by the kings and lords of Central and Eastern Asia.

In the 6th century, the capital Cham was located in Simhapura, on the site of the present-day Tra Kieu. In the 8th, 9th century the capital was moved further south, to Po Nagar (Nha Trang). Cham architecture is a religious architecture. Although they are not grandiose monuments like Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Burma, or Borobudur in Indonesia, the Cham temples and towers are of great beauty, full of grace and poetry despite their modest dimensions.
They have a monumental and solemn appearance thanks to a decoration composed of rich sandstone sculptures and ornamental motifs finely engraved in bricks.
