Extension to Arakan
(Trip of 4 days / 4nights from Yangon)


On the west of Burma, in the province of Arakan, the ruins of the ancient medieval city of Mrauk U, later archeological site and less known than Bagan but which deserves the detour broadly when the season allows it. You can reach it by the river.

Brief itinerary:    

Day 1: Yangon – flight to Sittwe
Day 2: Sittwe – Mrauk U
Day 3: Mrauk U – Chin village - Mrauk U
Day 4: Mrauk U - Sittwe- flight to Yangon, transit in Ngapali.

Detailled itinerary:

Day 1: Yangon – flight to Sittwe
Free time until transfert to the airport for a flight to Sittwe in the late morning.
Arrival in Sittwe - the port city of Rakhine State closed to India that combine Burmese, Bengali and Chinese, which will give you another view of Burma. In the late afternoon, visit Sitwee: Payagyi Pagoda which contains a large bronze Buddha of more than 8 tons, the Museum established in a Buddhist monastery that has a superb collection of ancient Buddhist statues and votive tablets or clay pipes. Lunch and dinner at local restaurant. Overnight at hotel in Sittwe.

Day 2: Sittwe – Mrauk U
After breakfast in the early morning, set off by car to visit the main market of Sittwe, where fishermen, town and rural people come to buy and sell fish and general supplies. Boat trip  to Mrauk U, it takes about 72 km - 5 hours journey up river to the last royal capital of Rakhine. Fruits and mineral water aboard. Arrival in Mrauk U, you will visit  Shittaung temple, a shrine of 80,000 Buddhas, the adjacent Anndaw Thein Temple, Lay Myant Nar and the Pitaka Taik, explore a typical village of the Shakama (Thet) minority. And then transfer to Shwe Gau Taung Pagoda hill for enjoying the sunset. Have a picnic lunch aboard. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

Day 3: Mrauk U– Chin Village - Mrauk U
Take a traditional boat trip along the Laymyo river to Chin village where you’ll meet tattooed Chin tribes women. The villagers make their living by fishing, agriculture and weaving fabrics. Some of the ladies in this village have their faces tattooed since their childhood. The patterns of tattoo on their faces vary from one village to another. Picnic lunch before the road to Mrauk U. Visit the Koe Taung temple, it’s the largest temple in Mrauk U. The name means 'Temple of 90,000 Buddha Images' and the Mahabandoola Monastery. Transfer to the Harrie hill for viewing sunset. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

Day 4 : Mrauk U- Sittwe- flight to Yangon, a stop in Ngapali.
Departure by boat early in the morning (6.00 am) to Sittwe. You will arrive in Sittwe at noon and prepare for the flight to Yangon at 2 PM or 3 PM. Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch take the flight from Sittwe to Yangon, transit in Ngapali. Transfer from the airport in Yangon to your hotel. Diner in a local restaurant. Overnight at hotel. End of voyage.

The visit to Mrauk U located in the area of heavy rainfall during the monsoon
