Description Vietnam

Jewel of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam is a diamond whose every facet returns us unusual landscapes, unexpected encounters, and many other surprises that reflect a page of its history and culture with diverse influences. These are all reasons to discover this country that has opened up to tourism for twenty years, and whose history was mixed with that of France for almost a century.

Today, Vietnam is a destination more and more popular because it remained a country with "hidden charms", between tradition and modernity.

Located east of the Indochinese Peninsula, Vietnam stretches 1,600 kilometers from north to south. The 3,250-kilometer stretch of coastline is washed by the Gulf of Thailand, the Gulf of Tonkin, and the South China Sea, while the land borders mark the boundary between Vietnam and neighboring China, Laos, and Thailand. Cambodia.

Vietnam has 2 large river plains: the Mekong in the south and the Red River in the north. To the west, along the borders, are the areas of mountains and plateaus. The highest point is Mount Fansipan (3 143 m), located in the north of Bắc Bộ (ex Tonkin), a mountainous area that surrounds the vast plain of the Red River. It is this same river that bathes Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
The country is one of the planet's biodiversity hotspots: lush forests are home to amazing wildlife, while fish, crustaceans and birds abound in the Mekong Delta.

The national language of the country is Vietnamese; it is one of the rare languages of South-East Asia, with Malay and Indonesian, to be written in Latin characters. The 53 ethnic minorities each have their own dialect.

English is commonly used in hotels and in the tourism sector in general. It is spoken more easily in the South than in the North, because of the American presence during the Vietnam War. It is by far the most common foreign language today.

Have a nice trip to Vietnam!

The cruise was very relaxing with beautiful scenery. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food is fantastic and very plentiful. The service is five star! Halong Bay is a very beautiful place and definitely worth visiting! We did the 2 night/3 day cruise which was perfect and recommend Era Cruise for anyone Before travelling to Halong Bay, I was confused to book which cruise to stay overnight in Halong Bay. Glad that I made the right choice, because Era Cruise Halong is great, from picking up in Hanoi, service on board, their room and activities. Vietnam is made up of a mosaic of peoples. There are no fewer than 54 different ethnic groups from China, Cambodia and Thailand. This crucible contributes to make Vietnam an exceptionally rich country culturally.
Many ethnic groups live in the mountainous regions of the north, such as the Hmong, the Tay, the Dao ... In the center and in a part of the Mekong Delta are the Chams, survivors of the Hindu kingdom of Champa. In the highlands we find the Rhade, the Giarai (or Jorai) and the Raglai.

The history of Vietnam is complex. Vietnam was first occupied until the 10th century by China.
Once liberated from Chinese rule, the Vietnamese will spread along the coast from the Red River Delta to the Mekong Delta. Over the centuries, the dynasties will succeed and draw the borders of Vietnam as we know it today.
In the middle of the 19th century, the French arrive in Vietnam, and integrate it into their colonial empire.
The twentieth century marks the advent of anticolonialist movements.

The independence of Vietnam is proclaimed on September 2, 1945 by Ho Chi Minh. After the failure of the negotiations, the Viet Minh launched a new insurrection in December 1946, which will end with the peace accords of Geneva in 1954, and by the recognition by France of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam north of the 17th parallel.
The two sides of Vietnam know then the setting up of ideologically opposed governments: in the north a communist regime founded and directed by Ho Chi Minh, and in the south a nationalist regime proclaimed by Ngô Dinh Diêm and supported by the Americans.

The first battles between communist partisans and southern troops began in 1957 and experienced a rapid escalation following the American intervention. After fifteen years of bitter fighting and a heavy human toll, the war ends with the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement in 1973.
Vietnam is officially reunited on September 2, 1976 and Hanoi becomes the capital.
Today Vietnam is officially called "Socialist Republic of Vietnam", and the Communist Party is the only party. It is a young and proud country, which opened on the world for fifteen years.
The most important festivals in Vietnam are:
Tet Nguyen Dan - Lunar New Year (1-3 January): This is the most important Vietnamese holiday. It marks the beginning of a new year and the sign of the arrival of spring. According to the belief of the Asians, each lunar year is placed under an astrological sign.

Tet Nguyen Tieu (January 15th) is the first full moon day of the lunar year. At this festival, the pagodas and streets are decorated with lanterns. After the ceremony, we participate in the festival of lanterns of flowers, which is deposited in the river.
The second largest traditional festival in Vietnam, the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu) is an opportunity to reunite with his family. As you gaze at the moon, you can enjoy the "banh deo" (glutinous rice cake) and the "banh nuong" (grilled cakes) together and enjoy chrysanthemum green tea. It is also the most anticipated holiday season for children, who are offered new toys, including lanterns, masks and small drums and rattles, to animate the mid-autumn parade.

SOME RULES OF KNOW-LIVING:

In Vietnam, it is better to keep calm, not to be aggressive or angry.
Regarding a rule of manners, remember to take off your shoes when you enter a temple or a house.
In sacred places (pagodas, churches temples ...), speak in a low voice and avoid touching objects of worship (statuettes of genies and Buddhas). Wear clothes covering the shoulders and legs.
It is strongly discouraged to touch the head of a Vietnamese; in Europe, touching someone's head can be perceived as a friendly gesture, but it is not at all the case in Vietnam, it is for them a gesture that is very badly perceived. Indeed, the Vietnamese believe that the head is sacred since it is the seat of the soul.
At the table, do not plant the chopsticks in a bowl filled with rice. It is indeed a ritual that we do for the dead.

USEFUL TIPS

Avoid swimming in stagnant water (risk of parasitic infection).
Avoid walking barefoot on sand and wet soil.
Stay away from dead animals, animals themselves and their droppings.
Do not approach stray animals and dogs (risk of biting and rabies); do not pet the animals you meet.
Shake clothes, sheets and sleeping bag to avoid scorpion stings or snakes.
Ensure your road safety (wearing the seat belt, wearing the helmet in two wheels).
Never consume drugs purchased on the street.
Wash your hands regularly with hydro-alcoholic washing solutions

THE FOOD

Vietnamese cuisine is one of the most subtle and varied in Southeast Asia. Unlike its close neighbors, the Vietnamese cook without spice, but it is present fresh, sliced on the table for fans who would spice up their dishes.

Rice is the essential component of any Vietnamese meal, and the main condiment of Vietnamese cuisine is nuoc mam. It is a fish sauce fermented in salt. In addition, the use of aromatic herbs is ubiquitous; they are served separately so that you can add them according to your taste.

The cuisine of the North is largely based on noodle soups, simmered dishes, grilled meats. It allows palates to find the tastes of the products used.

In the kitchen of the Center there are many Cham elements and the imperial court of Hue. It is the most contrasting cuisine in the country. It is very refined and largely uses steam cooking. Beware however, it is the exception that confirms the rule, many dishes (those inspired by Cham) are cooked with hot peppers.
Southern cuisine is inspired by the North, but with local ingredients. It is characterized by many sweet and savory.

Here are some Vietnamese specialties:
The phở: native of Hanoi, it is the national dish par excellence. Made with broth, beef slices and rice noodles. It is topped with more or less fresh soy, Chinese basil, mint, lime and peppers.

Another typical dish and very appreciated is the banh khoai or bánh xèo. It is a crepe or omelette, made from rice flour flavored with cumin, stuffed with soya beans, thin slices of pork and shrimp. It is served hot and crisp, seasoned with nuoc-mâm.

The famous bun bo is a Vietnamese salad made of vermicelli rice, beef, salad. We often add spring rolls cut into pieces.

The conviviality is often used during a Vietnamese meal, because all the dishes are arranged at the center of the table and accompanied by the necessary condiments such as: spicy sauce, soy sauce, possibly a small bowl of fresh chilli and the famous nuoc -mâm. Each uses according to his desires using bowl and chopsticks.

CLIMATE

Vietnam is located in subtropical and tropical climate zones, with an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The climate system of Vietnam is very complex because of its position, its topography and its extent (7 ° of latitude from north to south). Many areas, whether on the plateaux or on the coast, benefit from microclimates that can be very different from the general climate.

The north has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and accompanied by heavy monsoon rains. In autumn, the temperatures become more pleasant and the precipitations become rare. During the winter, temperatures can drop from 10 to 15 degrees with a slight drizzle. The mornings are cool. If you choose to travel to northern Vietnam in winter, it is better to have a little wool and a rain suit. Spring is the perfect season to visit northern Vietnam. The temperature is mild, the rains are rare and the rice fields are adorned with a gradient of incomparable green.

The south enjoys a typical tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season from October to May and the wet season from June to October. Even during the rainy season, the sun and the heat are at the rendezvous. The heavy storm and monsoon rains come to cool the atmosphere, especially in the evening.

The center of the country knows a mix of these two main climates, with a constant wet and hot. Beware however in autumn, the center is likely to receive the passage of typhoons born in the Pacific.

HANOI

Hanoi, the city "below the river" (Ha: river - Noi: on this side), does not receive this name until the nineteenth century. Previously, her name was Thang Long, "the city of the Dragon taking off".

The lakes that cover part of the territory of the municipality are the remains of this amphibious environment that became the capital of Vietnam in 1010, during the reign of Ly Thai Tô. Ly Thai Tô left his old capital of Hoa Lu, and it was the sending of a golden dragon along the river that decided the location of the new capital. Protected by dikes and drained by canals, residence of the son of heaven, whose role is to be the intercessor between the material world of humans and the divine world, the city is drawn according to a specific plan: the districts are distributed symbolically between the different components of society, on the model of the square earth that prevailed then. The heart of the city was the "civil city", where the mandarins, the soldiers and the people were distributed around the "forbidden city", royal residence and center of the world. The location of this city is then occupied by the citadel Vauban built by Gia Long, before being destroyed for the first time in the eighteenth century and be razed in 1848 by King Tu Duc. The last vestiges disappear at the beginning of the colonial period, and it is on this site that the station is built.

The city today, the capital of North Vietnam in 1954, and the reunited country since 1975, has more than 7.5 million inhabitants. It preserves an age-old heritage that rubs shoulders with colonial, modern and traditional urban realizations in a charming ensemble. The Great Western Lake, Ho Tay, a place of countless legends, is now the meeting place for walkers and lovers, near the Tran Quoc Pagoda, dedicated to the "defense of the country". The western quarters of the city offer two buildings of great interest near Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum. The One Pillar Pagoda, Mot Cot, founded in 1049, symbolizes a lotus flower emerging from the liquid universe, is dedicated to the goddess with a thousand arms, Quan Am. As for the Temple of Literature, intended for the formation of future mandarins, it is actually the first Vietnamese "university", under the patronage of Confucius. It welcomed from 150 to 300 students. It comprises five successive courses; the first is decorated with stelae bearing the names of the laureates in the contest of the mandarinate from 1487 to 1787; the second is lined with the pavilion of the Pleiades (nineteenth century); and the last court contains the temple of Confucius.

The center of the current city is organized around the "Lake of the restored Sword", Hoan Kiem, which is adorned with the stupa of the island of the turtle and the small temple Ngoc Son, dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao who managed to repel the Mongols in the thirteenth century, and the geniuses of war, literature and medicine. Around the lake extend the colonial districts, with purely Western buildings such as the Saint-Joseph cathedral or the purely Parisian style theater. To the north, between the ancient citadel and the banks of the Red River, the shopping districts and markets are developing around the axis of the "Silk Street", Hang Dao, to the Dong Xuan market. The Red River is crossed by the Chuong Duong Road Bridge and the Long Bien Railway Bridge, the former Paul Doumer Bridge, which was bombed daily during the Vietnam War.

THE TEMPLE OF LITTERATURE

The Temple of Literature, or Confucius Temple, is a very important historical and cultural monument of Hanoi and the country. It is the first Vietnamese university. The plan of this temple is strongly inspired by that of the Confucius temple raised in Kiu Feou Hien in China, the birthplace of the Master, but its dimensions are much more modest, while occupying an area of nearly three hectares, or 350 m long on 70 of width. It comprises five large courtyards, at the bottom of which is the temple dedicated to Confucius. This is one of the rare remains of the royal era that remained today in good condition.

The first university of Vietnam

It was founded in 1075 by King Ly Nhan Tong. It was originally intended for crowned princes, but in the second year it welcomed mandarin sons chosen by the king. Later, she was opened through an entrance exam to a wider social spectrum. This put forward the theoretical possibility of a social rise based on merit.

HALONG BAY

Each season, Ha Long Bay has its charm. In the spring mornings, the landscape disappears beneath the layers of silver mists that gradually fade away, revealing a multitude of resplendent islets under the tropical sun. In summer, the bay bursts with a marvelous fairyhood as the golden disk shines brightly in the sky, the sky and the waters shine a new luster before turning purple at the time when the junks return some fishing. On the autumnal moon nights, a cruise in the bay will make you discover a dream world that makes this immensity a paradise for lovers of calm and purity. Even in winter, the vegetation retains its freshness and greenery.

Ha Long means "the dragon descending". The bay owes this name to the following two legends:

- A great dragon one day left his refuge in the mountains to rush into the sea. On the way, he squirmed so much that he smashed the mountains. When it finally plunged into the sea, the water level rose abruptly and submerged the land, leaving only the peaks of the mountains.

- Formerly, the inhabitants of the region would have seen from time to time a majestic dragon come down clouds to come and take his antics with his cubs on the waves of the bay. When people were suffering from drought, the animal was watering the chapped lands. In stormy weather, he protected the fishing boats from the sea and brought them back to the port. But one day, dragon mother and her little ones disappeared into the heavens, and very bad people came to bring destruction and death to the region. The inhabitants implored the aid of their benefactor, who immediately descended from the clouds, spitting fire on the wicked. The mother-dragon ditch took the name of "Ha Long Bay," and the tongues of fire that fell into the sea became a multitude of rocky islands.

HUE

Hue is the heiress of a long history dating back to the time when it was the seat of a Chinese imperial administration under the Hans dynasty in the 2nd century BC. Become a small independent principality, then temporarily capital of the kingdom of the Champa, it is not attached to the kingdom of Daï Viet that in 1036. She undergoes the avatars of the dynastic struggles between Lê, Trinh, Nguyen and Mac before being chosen like capital by the future emperor Gia Long in 1801. Like most Indochinese cities, the city of Hue is organized according to a highly symbolic scheme. On the edge of the Perfume River, Song Huong, the city is surrounded by five hills symbolizing the five elements (wood, fire, air, metal, water). The hill to the south, the "Royal Screen", plays a specific role of protection against the harmful magical influences attributed to this direction.

The city

The heart of the city is naturally the vast citadel reserved for the emperor and the imperial administration. Built by the daily effort of 80,000 workers, enclave of fortifications in the Vauban, perfectly oriented according to the cardinal points in accordance with the Chinese model, and opening with ten doors, it is formed of three concentric elements: the citadel, the city imperial (Kinh Thanh) and the purple city (Tu Cam Thanh), respective areas of the mandarinal hierarchy, the imperial family and the emperor. Each of these parts is itself marked by the opposition between the male elements in the east and the female domain in the west. The residential areas then developed on both sides of the fortress and on the south bank of the river, especially during the colonial period, succeeding here to release a rare harmony. Remained asleep for over a century in the shadow of its university, the most famous in Vietnam, the city has for some time a lively life. After dressing the wounds inflicted by the war, it has a great expansion, especially on the left bank of the Perfume River. Hue, which currently has nearly 350,000 inhabitants, has nevertheless kept its traditions and its sweetness of life.

The imperial tombs of Nguyen

The Vietnamese tradition is strongly attached to the cult of the ancestors and, naturally, the emperors carried to its highest point this conception of the honor returned to the deceased. The tombs run along the Perfume River, from upstream to downstream in the order of dynastic successions. Each of them recomposes the functions, if not the arrangement of the palace. The abode of the dead must be like that of the living. It includes a representation of the royal court and dignitaries of the army, the home of the deceased, the annex buildings, all leading to the hillock where the emperor rests. The styles vary over time, from the sober and bare Vietnamese style (tomb of Gia Long) to the free variations on the theme of Ming Chinese tombs (tomb of Minh Mang), then towards an aesthetic full of refinement (tomb of Tu Duc), before attempting a difficult baroque synthesis between tradition and modernism (tomb of Khaï Dinh).

HOI AN
The ancient city of Hoi An

The ancient Fo Fai is located 30 km south of Da Nang, and became a major port thanks to its location at the entrance of Quang Nam province, a fairly prosperous territory of the South. At the time, most of Lord Nguyen's trade with foreign countries took place in Hoi An. Moreover, all the ships coming from China, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, as well as European countries, on their way to the Far East for commercial affairs, were all calling at Hoi An. The excitement caused by its commercial relations turned the small town into a trading center. cultural, a commercial port. Thanks to these commercial relations, the port of Hoi An prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was there that skilled craftsmen of the South met, who learned from the West the techniques of building boats, molding firearms, melting metals and making watches or other products. The prosperity of Hoi An had a good influence on the breeding of silkworms and weaving. Mulberry trees have been planted along the river and around Hoi An.

When large ships began mooring there, the estuary of the Thu Bon River became blurred and the trade had to move to Danang Bay. It could be regretted, but it allowed Hoi An to stay away from the damage of industrial development and thus keep its architecture and charm. Today, Hoi An is the only ancient city where one can find in primitive state all together of rich and varied remains including the streets, the piers and the civil and religious buildings. In Hoi An you can see narrow streets, roofs of different levels, double tiles covered with mosses ... The style of architecture is a bit like that of Hanoi and Hue, we also see the influence of China and Japan. The houses are very deep, their rear communicating with another street or overlooking the river. The interiors are entirely made of precious wood on which have been carved fruits, flowers or very lively animals.

The Japanese bridge

It is at the bridge - pagoda that we can see the harmony of the architectural combination. It is a double bridge construction and Japanese style house. This wooden bridge 18 m long and 3 m wide remains solid through the centuries. It is lacquered with red and minutely carved. In the middle of the bridge on the north side is the statue of Genius Bac De astride a horse. At both ends of the bridge are two monkeys and two wooden dogs painted gray. A Japanese legend tells that everyone is placed on the back of an aquatic monster called Ivamazu, his head is in India while his tail is in Japan. That is why, to avoid this scourge, the Japanese have built this bridge - pagoda, dedicated to the genie Bat Dê exorcise the monster with his sword.

THE FORMER KINGDOM CHAMPA AND THE CHAM TOURS

Champa is the name formerly given locally to a tree with a generally white and very fragrant flower, Michelia Champaca. The Champa kingdom stretched several hundred kilometers from north to south (from Da Nang-Quy Nhon-Nha Trang to Phan Rang). Its territory was narrow and possessed less wealthy land than Tonkin. However he possessed mineral wealth, especially with gold. They practiced agriculture and shipping.

They were also excellent traders. They exploited valuable products: sandalwood, cinnamon, peppers, elephant tusks, rhinoceros horns and precious woods that they sold to Indians, Arabs, Chinese, Japanese. The sandalwood of the Cham was known in several countries of the region and sought by the kings and lords of central and eastern Asia. Glazed ceramics were also well known among the Chams. In the 6th century, the capital Cham was installed in Simhapura, on the site of the current Tra Kieu. About twenty kilometers to the south-west, was installed the holy capital of My Son. In the 8th, 9th century the capital was moved further south, to Po Nagar (Nha Trang). The champa adopted Buddhism in the 7th century, without however rejecting its old beliefs. Cham architecture is a religious architecture. It includes brick towers dating from the 7th century to the 17th century.

Before the 7th century, the towers were made of wood, they were burned during the wars. Although they are not grandiose monuments like Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Burma, or Borobudur in Indonesia, Cham temples and towers are of great beauty, full of grace and poetry despite their modest dimensions. They have a monumental and solemn appearance thanks to a decoration composed of rich sandstone sculptures and ornamental motifs finely engraved in bricks. Cham architecture is Indian inspired. The structures form ensembles comprising a main temple (Kalan) surrounded by towers and outbuildings. In Kalan, worship of a deity takes place inside the sanctuary, a small square room with a pyramid-shaped roof. Kalan is the miniature symbol of the sacred universe. The body of the tower is likened to an altar whose roof represents Mount Meru, Kingdom of Shiva, place of residence of the deities. Usually, the Kalan open to the east, direction of the rising sun where the movement of cosmic time begins.

The Cham bricks were heated slowly, hence their weak resistance. There is no trace of mortar and yet the Cham towers have resisted for millennia to the attacks of bad weather, which proves that the technique of manufacture and use of the bricks had reached at the Cham a very high level. These towers have certainly suffered the erosive action of rain, sun and wind, but the bricks have remained welded to each other. Research is underway to uncover the secret (they would have used Dau Rai resin in boiling, mixed with lime from cooking shellfish and brick powder, today the inhabitants of the Center du Vietnam still use this resin to caulk their boats. The mixture is very adhesive and very resistant). It was only after the construction of the tower that the walls were decorated with ornamental motifs, human and animal figures following an extremely delicate technique

HO-CHI-MINH-CITY

Located on the Saigon River, the city is located more than eighty kilometers from the sea, on the last farmlands of the Mekong Delta, and currently has more than eight million inhabitants. Khmer city of Prey Nokor, it develops mainly thanks to the growth of the exchanges between the waterways coming from Cambodia and the sea routes directed mainly towards China. The primitive site of the city is on a small eminence, emerging from the waters, located at the current location of the cathedral.

In the early eighteenth century, the city is attached to the Nguyen Empire and then known a spectacular development, taking the name of Saigon, whose etymology remains uncertain. In 1791, Gia Long had a citadel built by a French architect to protect the growing activities of the prosperous Chinese colony established along the river, in what is now known as Cholon. Saigon is then taken in 1859 by a French naval expedition. Wishing to make the city an example of Western urbanism, and compete with Batavia or Singapore, the French reorganize the urban pattern, filling canals, drawing streets geometrically, sanitizing wetlands, and making large plantations trees. The main roads are the boulevards drawn perpendicular to the river, especially Catinat Street (Dong Khoi Street at present) and National Street (Ha Ba Trung Street). Steam trams run along the main arteries of the city. This district remains today the heart of the city, around the cathedral, the theater and the post office.

The city is growing rapidly, marked by the imprint of colonial architecture as part of a harmonious development plan. After 1954, new residential neighborhoods and large buildings appeared, such as the current Reunification Palace or the United States Embassy, a historic site of the Saigon Falls, from which thousands of Vietnamese were evacuated by helicopter to ships of the 7 "fleet.

Chinatown Cholon, whose name means "big market", is located west of the center of the city. Articulated around the great Tran Hung Dao Avenue, parallel to the Rach Ben Nghe canal, and the Binh Tây market, it is highly individualized on the architectural level, characterized by the proliferation of anarchic constructions. It is populated by more than 500,000 Vietnamese of Chinese origin, the Hoa, who are grouped by dialect and are traditionally divided into five corporations corresponding to their sector of commercial activities. The influx of refugees during periods of war causes new growth on the periphery, including on the east bank of the Saigon River, served by the incessant nonstop bins, neglecting any rule of urbanism.
